In October, our minds turn to a few things. Fall is officially here, Halloween decorations are in full swing and scary movies are in the theaters. In Florida, however, it’s all about events. Universal has its annual Halloween Horror Nights. Disney has Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween party and Busch Gardens has their annual Howl-O-Scream. If you go even further south of Florida, the Florida Keys to be precise, you’ll find a completely different fall celebration. Down there, it’s time for Fantasy Fest.
Fantasy was started back in 1979 by two businessmen. Tony Falcone and Bill Conkle turned what was supposed to be a party to drum up business into a 10 day event that is starting to rival Mardi Gras. Every year a theme is picked and this year it’s Animated Dreams and Adventures. Its basic roots are in the Japanese art of Anime but you can bet you’ll see costumes ranging from Minions from Despicable Me to the titular Dragon Ball Z straight from the East.
Seeing as how this is a long event, there are all kinds of deals to be had. There are several places to stay while you enjoy all of Fantasy Fest such as Almond Tree Inn, the Cases Marina Resort and La Te Da. You’ll want to check out the website for fantasy fest ASAP to see the deals offered during the event.
While you’re in tour, you’ll want to check out the unique places to eat. The Bourbon St. Pub, the Aqua Bar and Night Club and of course Coyote Ugly are only a few of the local places you can partake of while you enjoy your fest. Each place has its own specials and is located in the area. Contact your hotel to see which ones are closest to you!
Last but certainly not least, there’s the fest itself. There’s the 13th annual haunting of Ft. Taylor. There are scares provided all over the Ft. , as well as three unseen sections of it! They are only open for this event so make sure and attend! At Peppers of Key West, there’s a taste test of over 100 different flavors of sauces. For the more adult venture, there’s Indecent Exposure. On a rooftop bar above the Bull & Whistle, there’s a party going on and it’s clothing optional. They also have body painting. Another great event is the Bahama Village Goombay Festival. Taking place in the heart of Bahama Village, the festival includes nonstop music from gospel to reggae as well a main entertainment stage! One of the main attractions at Fantasy Fest is the crowning of the Conch King and Queen. There’s stage show featuring local celebrities, as well as a VIP buffet with reserved seating! And in case just simple fun isn’t enough to convince you, proceeds this event goes to AIDS Help. Log on to the website to find details for the rest of the events.
